Functional nutrition is rooted in a simple but powerful principle: understanding the root cause of symptoms, rather than just managing them.

My name is Kara Dellow, and I am a Nutritional Therapist. My approach is personalised because I recognise that every client has a unique story, lifestyle, and biochemistry. While strong nutrition and lifestyle foundations are essential, there are times when symptoms persist despite best efforts. This is where functional testing can offer valuable insight.
What is Functional Testing?
Functional testing allows us to look more deeply into how the body functions. Rather than relying on assumptions, we can use data to guide targeted and personalised interventions.
In my practice, I may use:
Comprehensive gut function testing
Food sensitivity panels
Hormone testing
Nutrigenomic analysis
These tools help identify imbalances that may not always be detected through standard routes but can significantly impact how you feel day-to-day.
Testing is never used in isolation; it’s combined with a detailed case history to build a complete picture.
Case Study 1: When ‘Nothing is Wrong’ isn’t Enough
A female client came to me experiencing persistent nausea, particularly around mealtimes, which was significantly affecting her appetite and quality of life.
She had undergone multiple GP and specialist consultations over a 12-month period, including investigations with a gastroenterologist. After extensive testing, she was told there was nothing serious and was discharged without further support. Despite this, her symptoms continued, leaving her frustrated, unheard and unsupported.
We decided to run a comprehensive gut function test.
The results revealed:
Two parasites
A significant imbalance in her gut microbiome
For the first time, there was a clear explanation for her symptoms.
With this insight, we implemented a targeted protocol to eradicate the parasites, restore gut balance, and support digestion. This case highlights how a deeper investigation can uncover root causes when conventional testing has ruled out disease but not dysfunction.
Case Study 2: ‘Burnout’ and Hidden Depletion
Another client, a midlife woman, came to me with severe fatigue. She described feeling “tired but wired,” with no energy, motivation, or resilience.
A comprehensive hormone panel revealed:
Very low oestrogen and progesterone – consistent with menopause
Flatlined cortisol levels throughout the day – consistent with ‘adrenal fatigue’
This pattern indicated a dysregulated stress response, often seen after prolonged periods of physical or emotional demand.
As we explored her history, it became clear she had spent years prioritising others. After the sudden loss of her children’s father, she raised two boys alone. Now more independent, she found herself depleted - skipping meals, with little appetite or motivation to nourish herself.
The test results provided validation. They showed just how depleted her body had become and helped her understand why she felt the way she did.
Our work focused on:
Rebuilding nutritional status
Supporting energy production and stress resilience
Establishing consistent nourishment and a daily rhythm
She loved yoga but had lost the energy to practise. Our goal was not only to improve her symptoms but also to help her regain the energy to return to the activities that gave her strength and joy.
Why Testing Matters
These cases demonstrate how functional testing can provide clarity where there has been uncertainty.
Testing is not about replacing conventional medicine; it complements it. It allows us to:
Identify underlying imbalances
Personalise interventions
Track progress over time
Empower clients with understanding
Most importantly, it helps move us from guesswork to informed decisions.
A Personalised Approach
Not every client needs testing. Often, simple nutrition and lifestyle changes can create significant improvements.
However, when symptoms are persistent, complex, or unexplained, testing can be a valuable tool in uncovering what’s really going on.
My approach is always tailored, evidence-informed, and centred around you as an individual.
Because when we understand the “why,” we can create a clearer, more effective path to optimal health. If you are interested in working with Kara, please complete the contact form and select her from the practitioner list.
